In the late 1940s, an American physical chemist named Willard Libby first developed a method to measure radioactivity of carbon-14, a radioactive isotope.
However, the principle of carbon-14 dating applies to other isotopes as well.
Potassium-40 is another radioactive element naturally found in your body and has a half-life of 1.3 billion years.
This technique works well for materials up to around 50,000 years old.
Each radioactive isotope decays by a fixed amount, and this amount is called the half-life.
